Marijuana Studies Lead to Memory Improvement!

Classic Stoner

Ghanja Brain

Everybody knows a forgetful stoner, but research suggests that low doses of marijuana could be good for memory, and even help prevent Alzheimer’s disease.

When given a compound similar to THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, rat brains displayed reduced levels of inflammation associated with Alzheimer’s disease. The drug also stimulated the production of proteins associated with memory formation and brain cell growth.

“Everyone is aware that smoking too much marijuana impairs memory,” said Ohio State University psychologist Yannick Marchalant. “Our work stays on the safe side — doses that we know are not going to impair memory, but improved it.”

Marchalant and fellow OSU psychologist Gary Wenk previously showed that marijuana can improve memory formation in rats. The latest research, presented at this week’s Society for Neuroscience annual meeting, provides a detailed look at THC’s effect on the brain. Read the rest of this entry »

Marijuana vs. Aspirin

Marijuana Prescription

Marijuana Prescription

When Bayer introduced aspirin in 1899, cannabis was America’s number one painkiller. Until marijuana prohibition began in 1937, the US Pharmacopoeia listed cannabis as the primary medicine for over 100 diseases. Cannabis was such an effective analgesic that the American Medical Association (AMA) argued against prohibition on behalf of medical progress. Since the herb is extremely potent and essentially non-toxic, the AMA considered it a potential wonder drug.

Instead, the invention of aspirin gave birth to the modern pharmaceutical industry and Americans switched away from cannabis in the name of “progress.” But was it really progress? There can be no doubt that aspirin has a long history as the drug of choice for the self-treatment of migraines, arthritis, and other chronic pain. It is cheap and effective. But is it as safe as cannabis?

History:

Marijuana has been used for over 5,000 years.
No one has ever overdosed on marijuana.
Aspirin has been used for 108 years.
Approximately 500 people die every year by taking aspirin Read the rest of this entry »

Who says drinking and smoking is bad?

The Magical Leaf

The Magical Leaf

A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of California San Diego, used a type of high-tech scan called diffusion tensor imaging to compare microscopic changes in brain white matter. The study showed that brain white matter tracts were “more coherent in adolescents who binge drink and use marijuana than in adolescents who report only binge drinking,” the researchers wrote. “It is possible that marijuana may have some neuroprotective properties in mitigating alcohol-related oxidative stress or excitotoxic cell death.” The scientists noted that such protection has already been shown in lab and animal studies. Why is marijuana illegal? In twenty words or less:

"Reefer makes darkies think they're as good as white men."

Those were the words of the guy who outlawed it.[1]

The current situation, in nineteen words:

Marijuana is illegal so that we can arrest poor people for no good reason.

    Marijuana is harmless.

    The end.
